Welcome aboard South Tyneside Children’s Emergency Care Centre and Paediatric Short Stay Assessment Unit.

South Tyneside Sexual health have teamed up with staff from A&E at South Tyneside District Hospital to offer home screening kits from the main hospital site. Young people aged 16 – 24 years of age can now collect home testing kits from A&E department’s public waiting areas discreetly with no consultation needed . The testing kits screen for two common bacterial infections Chlamydia & Gonorrhoea which have the most incidence and prevalence in the under 25 age group within South Tyneside. Of the under 25 population that used the free postal screening service in 2018, 7% were diagnosed positive for infections. Nationally 70% of females and 50% of men do not experience symptoms of sexually transmitted infections. By collaborating and working in partnership with staff at A&E, this provides wider  service access to  further testing locations throughout the borough with the aim to increase testing uptake, early diagnosis and to improve health inequalities within South Tyneside

Well done staff at A&E, a fabulous service and fantastic team you have.
