South Tyneside Sexual Health is now offering a smallpox vaccination to help protect you against Monkeypox

Monkeypox is a rare disease and is caused by a virus similar to the smallpox virus. The smallpox (MVA) vaccine should give a good level of protection against monkeypox.

South Tyneside Sexual Health are now offering the smallpox (MVA) vaccine to people who are most likely to be exposed to monkeypox.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) currently recommends that in sexual health clinics, MVA is offered to:

  • Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) at highest risk of exposure. Your doctor or nurse will advise vaccination for you if they consider you are at high risk.
